With a long day ahead of him, Markus heaved his backpack up over his shoulder. The Cool spring air greeted him as he stepped outside the small country house and made his way to the end of the lane. Tall oaks waved in the gentle wind as their leaves grew back with the return of summer. With mud caked to the side of his boots, Markus approached the end of the lane with a rather smug face; Monday morning's were not his cup of tea. The second hand on his watch ticked away while he waited for the "cheese wagon" as he called it, to arrive. Once more the red flashing lights came into his view, and Markus stepped on.

Pushing through the kids and bags that narrowed the already minuscule isle, Markus plopped himself down in the furthest seat from the front. Tossing his book bag into the seat in front of him, he slid towards the isle. Nodding to Declan, he grabbed his cards as his friend dealt him into the never-ending Cheese Wagon poker tournament. They never played for much. Being a rural school meant they didn't have a lot of spending cash so it had been decided that they would play for bottle caps; a testament to the community's reputation for supporting the most bottling companies.

"How's about I serve ya up a nice cup of shut the...," Markus is interrupted by Myrtle the bus driver, "How about you take a seat and mind your tongue unless of course you'd prefer to walk to school?" "No ma'am," replied Markus as he took his seat. That was Davis Smithers. He was only two months and a day older than Markus but he thought he was really something on account of his family had just recently moved to the country from the big city of Toronto. Needless to say, he and Markus were not on the best of terms. |
